UNITY: praised, desired, but missing [Dr. Shefqet Krasniqi, Husamedin Abazi, Enis Rama]
Summary
In this great Prishtina Talks event — the thirtieth in the series — one of the most important subjects for Muslims today is taken up: unity. A panel with three well-known imams, pioneers of Islamic discourse in the Albanian lands — Dr. Shefqet Krasniqi, Husamedin Abazi and Enis Rama — examining why unity, praised and desired as it is, remains missing in practice.
Dr. Shefqet Krasniqi opens the panel by setting the great values of Islam against the reality of Muslims today — a faith that calls to unity, to love and to knowledge, beside a community that often finds itself divided, envious and ignorant — and restores unity as a Qur'anic foundation. Husamedin Abazi divides the question into three levels — human, national and Islamic unity — proposing that the subject be named more precisely “obligatory unity” rather than merely “desired”, and dwelling on the third level, where our condition, “neither as an ummah nor as part of one”, is not to be envied.
Enis Rama closes with an original restructuring of the arguments: unity as identity, as an aim of the sharia, as evidence of the quality of belief, and as a return to the origin. He proposes an essential distinction between “unity in reference” (all of us returning to the Qur'an, the Sunnah and our forebears) and “unity in conclusions”, and ends by saying that unity among us “is not active — it is passive”, and that each of us has to take personal responsibility for making it work.
