Alternative journalism for the Republic we wanted
with Salih Kabashi
Summary
In this Prishtina Talks presentation, the publicist, journalist, dissident and former political prisoner Salih Kabashi tells the story of the magazine “Alternativa” — one of the most important organs of Albanian alternative journalism during the hardest years of repressive Serbian rule in Kosovo. The lecture is at once personal testimony, historical documentation, and a reflection on the part an alternative voice played in forming the political awareness of Albanians.
Kabashi describes the circumstances in which “Alternativa” was founded — when the official newspapers were closed and Albanian journalists were being persecuted systematically, while the Serbs were trying to make Kosovo scorched earth — and how the magazine became “the avant-garde of the political alternative of Kosovo”. He describes the financial network that sustained it, chiefly the Albanian diaspora — those from Llap, from Drenica, Albanians from Macedonia — the effort to bring the various Albanian voices together around a minimal consensus, and the part it played in making Europe aware of the Albanian question through work with foreign journalists, among them Slovenes and Ervin Sherdhe, who wrote the first reports on the situation in Kosovo.
In the second half, Kabashi turns to broader reflections on Albanian journalism — from the well-known voice of Ibrahim Rugova and his strategy, to the calls for a Republic of Kosovo that motivated whole generations. The lecture closes with an implicit comparison between the era of “Alternativa” and the reality of today: the courage journalism had then, the aspiration to a state, and what it means now to keep the spirit of authentic alternative journalism alive.
