Episode 20

Fluid identities

with Redi Shehu

Summary

In this Prishtina Talks presentation, the well-known publicist and analyst from Albania Redi Shehu — a familiar face from national television — takes up in depth the idea of “fluid identities”, one of the principal subjects the West, and increasingly the Albanian space too, faces in the age of postmodernism.

Shehu builds the argument in four necessary stages: first, what identity is as a social construct; second, national identity, and the most important part of identity as a whole; third, religious identity and its role in the structure of the personality; and last, the new identities — the universal identity of self-display, and the digital identity, both characteristic of our age. The word “fluid” means liquid, a metaphor borrowed from the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman to describe an age in which identities are no longer settled and defined but move, change, and often break into pieces according to the context.

In the central part, Shehu argues that a person does not have one identity but a stratified “multiplicity of identities” — national, religious, cultural, familial, professional, digital — and that the liquidity of them in our time causes deep crises for individuals and for societies alike. He uses Benedict Anderson's theory of “nations as imagined communities” to show how national identity is built through shared narratives — language, historical memory, symbols — and how those constructions are now challenged by globalisation, digitalisation and “the society of the spectacle”.

The lecture closes with the consequences for the Albanian space: how fluid identities create confusion among the young, why humanism and moral values remain essential even in a digital age, and how a durable identity can be built in a world where everything appears liquid.
