Nexhmedin Spahiu explains that the Xhemijet was founded to defend the Muslims of Kosovo, the Sandžak and Macedonia after the Serbian occupation, and that — in the words of one Serbian sociologist — it worked more as an Albanian patriotic organisation than a religious one, which gave Nexhib Draga the role of the most accomplished politician of his time.
