Business Intelligence

with Fuad Gashi

Summary

In this Prishtina Talks presentation, Fuad Gashi — a business intelligence specialist with experience in the management of several Kosovar companies distributing international brands, and the founder of Kortones, which provides BI services to local and international businesses — sets out a management model still in its early days in Kosovo: decision-making based on data.

The presentation runs along three main lines. First, the history of business intelligence: from the first commercial computer in the 1950s and 60s, through the database management systems of the 80s, to the explosion of data brought by the internet after 2000, and on to today's trends with the integration of AI and self-service BI.

Second, the technical process of BI — from identifying the internal and external sources, to ETL (extract, transform, load), the analytical modelling of the data, and visualisation for decision-making.

Third, the concrete benefits for a company: informed decisions instead of intuition, the efficiency that comes from automating repeated reports, and the competitive advantage of real-time access to market trends. Fuad closes with a look at a real dashboard, where a manager can see every key indicator of the company updated automatically, and put questions to the data in plain language.

Some of the points covered: 📌 The history of BI, from the 1950s to today's data-driven culture 📌 The three macro-trends: AI integration, self-service BI and natural language 📌 The ETL process: from the raw sources to the final report 📌 The head chef analogy, as a way into data modelling 📌 Informed decision-making against decision-making by intuition
